King Frederik Queen Mary income revealed in Danish Royal Family’s annual report for 2024, the first since the change of throne

King Frederik X and Queen Mary were paid just under $30 million in 2024, according to a financial report published by the Royal House of Denmark.

The majority of that money – $28.6 million (125 million kroner) – came from state funds, known as the parliamentary allowance, or Royal Civil List.

The King and Queen earned an additional $481,000 (2.1 million kroner), deemed as ‘other income’, from ticket sales for tours of Fredensborg Palace, renting out other royal residences and the sales of cars.

The Civil List covers the Danish royal family’s operating costs for salaries, goods and services and the royal family’s private expenses.

The period covers January 1, 2024, through to December 31, 2024 – Frederik’s first 12 months as King of Denmark and Mary’s as Queen of Denmark.

King Frederik and Queen Mary were also given an “extraordinary subsidy” of $6.5 million (28.7 million kroner) by the state in 2024 – a one-time grant through the Civil List’s reserved funds – to help with costs associated with the change of throne and other “succession and future obligations”.

The change of throne itself, which took place on January 14 2024, cost $1.4 million (6.5 million kroner).

Frederik was proclaimed King of Denmark at Christiansborg Palace following the abdication of Queen Margrethe II, an event which was watched by tens of thousands of people in the streets of Copenhagen, while millions of others tuned in via television and online.

“January 14, 2024 was a landmark date in Danish history,” Christian Schønau, the Lord Chamberlain, said.

“His Majesty King Frederik X assumed the throne. A new chapter in the 1,000-year history of the Danish monarchy began.”

Some of the money from that reserve fund has also been used in connection with the change of throne on rebranding including the replacement of uniforms and monograms, refurbishment of office spaces, recruitment and retirement of staff, changes to decorations and medals and security upgrades.

The financial records, which were released by the palace on March 26, show “a high level of activity” during Frederik’s first year on the throne.

“The King and the Queen wish to lead a Royal House that is visible and accessible throughout the country,” the report said.

King Frederik and Queen Mary have a spending cap of $3.8 million (17 million kroner) which is set annually for expenses in connection with the royal family’s activities and daily life, which are more of a private nature and not connected with their official duties.

They used slightly less than the total allowance, spending $3.4 million in the past year.

King Frederik and Queen Mary were given a bigger expenditure cap that Queen Margrethe II had as monarch – $2.9 million (13 million kroner) – because the money also covers their four children Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.

According to the report the accounts were “satisfactory” but expenditure is expected to be high in the coming months due to the increased “level of activity following the King’s accession to the throne”.

The report gave a breakdown of the main income and expenses of the Danish royal family throughout 2024.

Personnel expenses came to $16 million, operating expenses were just over $4 million, $3.8 million was spent on administration and $1.3 million was spent on property expenses.

The royal family had a mammoth year in 2024, starting with the accession on January 14.

Throughout the year the King and Queen took part in seven trips abroad and hosted two incoming state visits. They also toured parts of Denmark and Greenland on board the royal yacht as part of their summer cruise program.

The Royal House’s annual report also marked a change from how things had been done under the reign of Margrethe II.

The report was cut in half from around 60 pages to just 30 and featured highlights from each of the royal family’s key members including King and Queen, Crown Prince Frederik, Queen Margrethe, Prince Joachim, Princess Marie and Princess Benedikte.
