Kmart finds: The $32 Kmart buy that will transform your entryway while kickstarting your decluttering journey

Published on

Once we’ve had the realisation our home has too much clutter and needs reorganising it can soon get overwhelming knowing where to start.

For professional organiser Belle Harte there is one perfect place to kick off your decluttering journey and it’s the entryway to your home.

Tidying and streamlining this space has multiple benefits that flow on to other areas of the home.

“I find one area that is really good to start on… is an area where you look at all the time, like the entryway to your house. When you walk into the house it’s so nice to come in and see a nice, clear space and that’s going to motivate you to do other areas,” she tells 9honey Living.

The Organised Abode Co founder shared more tips on decluttering this space in a TikTok video where she showed how to reorganise it on a budget.

“[The entryway is] normally a quick and inexpensive project like this one I did for a client, which took around half an hour and the products were under $50,” she says.

Harte used several Kmart products to tidy the space by organising the hallway table already in the hallway.

To get most of the shoes off the floor, she chose the $32 three-tier clear shoe rack but used only two tiers.

A $14 rope basket was used for children’s shoes, which are too small to fit on the rack and easier for little hands to grab and put back when they’re kept in a basket. This basket was placed beside the clear shoe stand and perfectly fit the bottom shelf of the hallway table.

For all those bits and pieces you need as you’re heading out the door, like sunglasses, mints and a lint brush, Harte used the small and wide, small and narrow and medium and wide clear drawers to organise the drawers in the hallway table. These containers range in price from $2.30 to $6.

After tackling the entryway you can continue the approach of decluttering in small quick bursts around the home.

And if your entryway is already organised or you’d prefer to start with another small area there are plenty of places to choose.

It can be as simple as picking one drawer or one shelf.

“So not thinking, like, ‘I’ve got to organise my whole pantry today’ look at just doing a category. [For example] I’m going to organise my baking supplies and just look at doing like 5, 10, 20 minute things every day or a couple of times a week, and before you know it you’re going to have everything organised,” Harte says.

“That one of the reasons we get so overwhelmed by clutter because we’re looking at at it as like this big thing and it makes so much more sense just to break it down into small manageable tasks.”

Another tip that will make reorganising a space less overwhelming is to declutter it before heading to the shops for any containers and baskets. This will save time, money and clutter.

“It is really essential to do those things before shopping because otherwise you’d just be left with storage products and most people don’t return things that they don’t need,” Harte says.

And if you need drawer organisers grab some paper, cut it to the size of the drawer and take that to the shops with you to ensure you get the perfect fit and configuration.

“I’m a fan [of the paper hack], especially for drawers [you’re adding containers to]… they come in a lot of different sizes, but it can be tricky when you go into the store and you think, ‘I’m gonna fit 10 of these [containers], but then you go home and they actually don’t. So it’s a really good thing,” Harte says.
