Kmart finds: The retro $12 Kmart buy shoppers say is perfect for storage in every room of the house

Plastic containers have become the go-to for storage in the home but a classic popular in decades past is making a comeback thanks to a Kmart buy.

A shopper shared her love for the product in an Instagram reel after using them in her pantry for a long time.

The post from Dina Santos revealed the 5.6L clear glass jar from Kmart is a huge hit with customers.

”If you are looking for affordable large glass jars and with good seal these jars from @kmartaus are fantastic. I have been using them for a while for my bakers flour and a few other things and they keep the products fresh,” Santos captioned the post.

The size and strong seal on the jars have led them to be used in pantries across Australia.

“I love these jars! They are such a good size too,” a woman said.

“These are so good perfect for flour,” one commented.

“They’re a great size aren’t they! I’ve got a few in the pantry too,” a follower said.

“They look handy Dina! It’s hard finding jars with good enough suction to keep things fresh,” another wrote.

The 5.6L jar is 29cm high with a diameter of 19.2cm and is made with soda-lime glass. It has a vintage look that a shopper on the Kmart website described as like “the big candy jars in the turn of the century stores in the USA”.

There are two other sizes in the same design; a 3.8L jar with a height of 24.5cm and an 18.5cm diameter and a 1.9L glass jar for $5.50 which is 21cm tall and has a 14cm diameter.

The medium and small sizes might be even more popular than the 5.6L jar as the 3.8L jar has a 4.8 star rating from 136 reviews on the Kmart website, while the 1.9L glass jar also has a 4.8 star rating and 105 reviews.

In terms of kitchen storage the jars are being used to store flour, sugar, rice, lentils, lollies, biscuits, dried fruits, coffee pods and marshmallows.

Shoppers who purchased the 3.8L jar aren’t just using them in the kitchen they’re also using them as storage in the laundry for powdered detergent, wool balls, detergent pods and scent boosters.

In addition they’re being used as storage for soap bars, sewing supplies and even as a temporary fish tank while the main one is being cleaned.

“Great jar for storing food (cookies, flour, sugar, etc). Appears to be quite airtight as cookies haven’t gone stale. Also use them as bathroom for bath salts and bath bombs,” a shopper who purchased the 3.8L jar said.

”These are perfect. Solid good size jar with a decent easy on/off lid. Orginally purchased 2, for the pantry, but bought 4 more as these are ideal elsewhere too, laundry, bathroom,” a woman wrote in a review of the1.9L jar.

“Feels quality and strong, the lid seal feels quality. We are using it as a laundry powder container,” a review of the 3.8L jar said.

If you don’t need the jars for storage customers have also found ways to use them as décor by making terrariums and filling with decorative objects.

”I have two of the large ones and have arranged fairy lights inside them and use them as ambiance lights. One has leaves in it and they both look great. The smaller versions would be great to fill with lollies for presents too. The glass is thick and the lid rubber seals, ensuring freshness,” a woman said in a review.
