Kroger is set to shut down 60 locations nationwide.

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Roughly 60 Kroger locations are set to shut down nationwide over the next 18 months.

The Cincinnati-headquartered grocery chain disclosed this information in a first quarter sales report submitted to the SEC, revealing they incurred a $100 million impairment charge due to the “planned closures,” as stated in the report.

In detail, the report includes the following statement:

During the first quarter, Kroger acknowledged an impairment charge of $100 million associated with the planned closure of around 60 stores in the coming 18 months. Consequently, Kroger anticipates a modest financial advantage from these closures. The company is dedicated to reinvesting these savings into enhancing the customer experience, ensuring that this decision will not affect their full-year guidance. Kroger will provide job opportunities in other locations for all employees currently working at the impacted stores.

FOX19 NOW contacted Kroger regarding the closures. A spokesperson for the media responded: “We do not expect any closures in the Cincinnati-Dayton area.”

According to its website, Kroger operates approximately 1,239 stores across 16 states, including Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.

The company did not specify which stores will be closing or the reasons behind the decision to close 60 locations.

In its first quarter sales report (excluding fuel and pharmacy sales), Kroger reported a slight decrease of $200 million compared to the same period last year in Q1 of 2025. Nonetheless, sales rose by 3.7 percent.
