Laundry routine: Woman sparks debate over boyfriend’s laundry detergent habit: ‘Convinced this is normal’

A woman has sparked a debate online over the correct way to pour detergent into the washing machine after discovering how her boyfriend does it.

The Aussie, whose partner is American, posted a video on TikTok asking for “help” over what she calls “mental behaviour in the house tonight”.

“Help?? I just asked my bf where the cap for the detergent is and he said ‘Oh I just fill it up and throw it in?’ With all the clothes??” the text on her clip read.

“He’s so convinced this is normal that he’s looking for ‘where it says it on the box’.”

The TikTok has so far been watched 6.4 million times and there is major consensus that her boyfriend’s habit is, in fact, actually quite normal.

“I do this?? so the cap isn’t covered in gross smiley soap residue??” a woman said.

“Girl, don’t make me defend a man,” one wrote.

“This is completely normal? I’m confused why everyone is confused,” commented a Tiktoker.

”Yes and then it doesn’t get sticky,” another said.

So if you aren’t already doing this and get annoyed by all the detergent that sticks inside the cap, then this might be an option for you.

However, there were plenty who don’t do this, with many not noticing any particular issue with detergent residue – and they’re very passionate about it.

“Everyone acting like the lid needs to be cleaned every time you use detergent….are you okay??? you literally just rinse the cap under the running water while the washer fills up. this is insane,” one said, with another adding you can also rinse it in the sink.

“Are yall gas lighting me in the comments? in all my 26 years on earth, I’ve never seen or heard about anyone throwing the cap in the washing machine!!” a woman wrote.

“I-I’m not understanding… how is everyone’s cap getting sticky? Mine are always just fine, no mess,” another commented.

Then there are those – this writer included – who pour detergent in the dispenser straight from the bottle and ignore the measuring cap entirely.

“I thought we all just tilted the bottle in for a split second and moved on with our lives,” a woman commented.

“lol I don’t use the cap I measure with my heart,” another said, and girl – same.

But there was one person who confirmed that the brand of laundry detergent the TikToker and her boyfriend have does instruct the user to put the cap in the washing machine.

“My cap says “toss in wash or rinse after use” so idk about yall but I can read,” they said.

Basically in this debate there is no right or wrong answer and can be down to personal preference.

If you do like to toss the cap in, just keep in mind that the plastic has the potential to break while inside and if the plastic is rough could possibly impact your clothing.

Another thing to consider is depending on your household and laundry setup you might not want your laundry detergent bottle to be cap-less in case it gets knocked over, so make sure it’s stored away where kids and pets can’t easily reach.
