Lindsay Dewey: Influencer mum’s chilling warning about the common household item that fatally injured her toddler son

A parenting influencer in the US whose 22-month-old son died following a tragic accident at home is raising awareness about the common household item that claimed his life.

Lindsay Dewey has taken to Instagram to share photos and videos with her almost 60,000 followers outlining how she and others are keeping Reed’s memory alive following his death in February after an unsecured mirror fell on him.

Since Reed’s death, Dewey has detailed how her family’s life changed in a matter of seconds after the large mirror that was leaning on a wall toppled on her son, fracturing his skull and causing an unsurvivable traumatic brain injury.

She first asked her followers for prayers in February, writing, “Reed has had a traumatic accident and we need a miracle. Please, please just agree and pray with us right now and for the days and weeks to come. Thank you.”

She announced he was brain dead in a follow-up post four days later. “Our precious, joyful and utterly perfect baby boy did not receive his earthly miracle,” she wrote.

“We are beyond shattered. We’ve been robbed of watching our wild and fun little boy grow up. It is not fair and he didn’t deserve this.”

She ended the post by saying “this is every parent’s worst nightmare. Hug and kiss your babies.”

Three days later, she posted a photo of herself and husband Eric Dewey with their son in hospital. He was on a ventilator and was lying on his mother’s chest in a hospital bed as his father leaned over to hug him. His bandaged head was covered by a hat.

In the accompanying post, Dewey revealed they had donated their son’s organs to five children.

“A piece of my heart will always be missing until I’m in heaven loving on you again,” she said before ending the post by sharing her last words to her son.

“I kissed him goodbye and whispered ‘Go save some lives baby’. I’ll never forget.”

Since Reed’s tragic death, Dewey has been raising awareness about mirror safety and has detailed how the tragic accident unfolded, despite fears she would be judged.

Dewey, who shares two older children with Eric, a fireman, said she was at their home in the US state of Idaho when the accident happened.

“Eric was on his way home from running an errand down the street and luckily was about three minutes away when I called him,” she wrote.

“I was making dinner 10 feet away from [Reed] and when I say it was a freak accident, it really was,” she continued, before detailing the 8-10 seconds that changed their lives forever.

“To make a long story short, apparently Reed had one of his suction cup bowls and stuck it on the mirror and was pulling back and forth… and he pulled the mirror down on himself.”

“I never even heard him playing by/with the mirror. Until I heard it fall and then within five seconds I lifted it off him.”

Dewey said she at first could not see Reed, who was under the mirror. She said that once she got the mirror off Reed she was initially relieved because he appeared uninjured, was conscious and wasn’t crying.

She said she now knows that “being awake but not crying after something like that is the worst sign” and she later learned the mirror had fractured Reed’s skull and caused a traumatic brain injury.

Her husband arrived home within minutes and was able to start first-aid until first responders arrived three minutes later.

By then he was unconscious but still showed no outward sign of injury apart from “some redness/visible raised bruising” on his head.

She also shared a photo of him at the scene to show how “normal and perfect” he looked.

Dewey said that every other item in their house was child-proofed and they even had devices to save a choking child due to Eric’s line of work.

She said they had never thought to anchor the mirror to the wall because she thought “there is no way our kids are strong enough to move it, let alone pull it down on themselves” however, it usually had a chair in front of it which had been moved after their dog peed on their rug, creating what she said was a ‘perfect storm’.

Dewey said she had chosen to share he story as it was “eating at me because I feel like the people who have mirrors in their homes with little kids need to know this”.

She also shared messaged from followers thanking her for raising awareness and showing photos of them anchoring mirrors and furniture in their homes.
