Luxembourg royal family: Prince Charles marks first royal outing at age four

The future King of Luxembourg has made his first public appearance at the age of four.

Prince Charles of Luxembourg, the son of Hereditary Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Duchess Stéphanie, made his first appearance in an official capacity with his parents to open a school named after him.

According to the royal family’s Instagram account, the family of three officially cut the ribbon for the Schoul Prënz Charles or Prince Charles school, with the namesake doing the honours himself.

“The primary school was built on the school complex named “Prince Guillaume” at the birth of the Hereditary Grand Duke when the Grand Ducal Couple lived between 1981 and 1987 in the municipality of Steinsel,” they added.

The four year old participated in his first official ceremony in the presence of Minister Claude Meisch and Mayor Fernand Marchetti as well as 600 guests, marking a huge political milestone for the young royal.

The prince, who wore a smart maroon polo jumper and brown pants on the occasion. was also seen in the photos pulling off a flag covering a plaque with his name on it and seeming confused in the middle of the official delegation, holding onto his father’s hand.

Born in 2020, Prince Charles is set to be the heir to the throne when his father will succeed the current ruler of Luxembourg, his grandfather the Grand Duke Henri.

Grand Duke Henri, 69, announced he would abdicate from the throne on 3 October in favour of his son, Prince Guillaume.

Henri will have reigned for 25 years when he steps down, having succeeded his father, Grand Duke Jean, on 7 October 2000.

Guillaume, 43, was made Lieutenant-Représentant in October 2024 and has been preparing for his future role.

Guillame and Stephanie also share another son, one-year-old Prince François.
