Man asks girlfriend to buy her own engagement ring

One man’s question about buying an engagement ring has resulted in his relationship being scrutinised by strangers.

The 24-year-old took to Reddit to ask whether his proposition for his girlfriend, 25, was out of hand after she seemed offended at his suggestion.

Sharing that they have been together for three years, are living together and are thinking of marriage, the logical next step would be to propose.

However, since he is between jobs, ”the problem is I really don’t have a lot of money and my girlfriend has a good salary.

“I know she has more in her bank account than I do for now but we’ll eventually have a joint bank account. Since our money will be shared anyway, I asked if she would pay for her engagement ring.”

He was shocked when his girlfriend’s reaction was less than enthused.

“I thought this made a lot of sense and wouldn’t be a problem. I was wrong. My gf seemed really offended by this and said that she wouldn’t fully buy her own ring.

“She’s been kind of distant with me and I’m wondering if my request was really so wrong.

“I don’t get this, it’s going to all be OUR money anyway, so why should it matter who pays for the ring?”

Commenters told him exactly what the problem was.

“So because one day her money will be yours anyway, you may as well skip the pretense that you care enough to make an effort?” one said.

“What’s the point of proposing if she’s buying the ring? It’s like she’s proposing to herself. Gonna make her do her own Christmas shopping, too? No surprises in this girl’s life, poor thing,” another added.

One asked, “If you’re not able to buy a ring, are you really [ready] to get married?”

Another elaborated that the man just “(showed) her what the rest of her life would be. You literally just told her, I don’t have crap, can’t wait to get ahold of your account, and if you want anything, you’ll be getting it for yourself.

“I would bet she is doing some soul searching right now, and I would suggest you do the same. It may not be the years of the man being the provider. But it is definitely the time for a partnership. A partnership is where both people are trying as hard as they can. I don’t get that vibe from you.”

The potential groom responded to the criticism, refuting the way the commenters classified him as a “gold digger”.

“Wow, I see everyone thinks I’m a gold digger after my gf’s money? That’s ridiculous, I love her for who she is, not her money,” he said.

He said he “really can’t afford the ring but we’d both like to get engaged as soon as possible and she deserves something nice. I don’t see why saying the money will be ours anyway is so bad, because it WILL.”
