Mark Bouris has achieved a lot in his life, that’s not up for debate.
But when it comes to his proudest achievements, raising his boys to understand the true value of money is high on that list.
In the latest podcast episode of The Pay Off with Sylvia Jeffreys, Bouris shared candid insights into his parenting style when it comes to managing money.
“When my boys were going to school, they needed money for bus fares and other stuff… They used to line up and make a submission to me about how much money they needed per week,” he explained.

“I used to make them all write it out by hand and list it, and they used to have to come make a pitch to me and I would pick it apart.”
Sylvia laughs, asking, “Were they nervous doing this?”
“They weren’t nervous,” Mark shared, explaining they “took the micky out of me all the time”.

When asked if they had to come find their dad at the end of the week with receipts, Mark said no.
“I took the view that if you run out of money, it’s your problem. You’ve got to come and ask me for more money.

“I didn’t do it to be mean because I’d always give them what they wanted… I did it for them to understand how much they’re spending and to be responsible. And I do really believe that works”.
