Meghan Markle admits she orders takeaway because ‘I don’t have time’ to cook every night | Duchess of Sussex podcast

The Duchess of Sussex has shared yet another relatable moment from her gilded life, admitting she does not cook every night because “I don’t have time”.

To feed her hungry family, Meghan often orders takeaway.

But, in keeping with her pledge of “taking something pretty ordinary and elevating it”, the duchess goes to great lengths to plate up the delivered food to make it look “beautiful”.

On the latest episode of her podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder, Meghan spoke about domestic life at her Californian home that she shares with Prince Harry and their two children Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, three.

She was speaking with Heather Hasson, co-founder of medical scrubs brand FIGS.

Hasson saw a need to make regular health care uniforms more user-friendly and stylish and developed the brand, which became the first company co-founded by a female duo to begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021.

Referring to Meghan’s rebrand into the lifestyle sphere with a cooking show on Netflix, and her brand As ever, Hasson said to the duchess: “I think what you’ve created is so amazing”.

“I’m a terrible cook, I can’t cook anything but I will bring you lemonade or something, and you can teach me something,” she said.

Offering to “whip something up” for Hasson from her garden, Meghan replied: “It’s very easy”.

“I think the whole point for me is when you see something that’s an easy solve in the everyday, that’s not complicated, not fussy, how do you get your hands involved and change the way of thinking surrounding it so it doesn’t feel daunting?

“I see vegetables and I see take-out – because I don’t have time to cook everyday – and I go ‘alright, but how do I still make this flattering and beautiful and present well and something that people find appetising’,” she added.

In an interview before the Netflix show premiered in March, Meghan insisted she was not a “trad wife” and told People she often served up the family’s favourite Chinese takeaway food on crockery.

”I like being able to do a hybrid.. but even when I get takeout, I will try to plate it beautifully,” she said, adding: “The series is about doing what you can do and doing it with love.”

A core focus of the duchess’ series With Love, Meghan is on home cooking and entertaining and promoting a domestic idyll.

But the show received mixed reviews, with many critics taking issue with the duchess for her dish presentation.

Meghan was mocked for cutting up fruit and using it to assemble a rainbow shape on a platter for children in what she described as a “sweet” way for working parents to start their weekends.

A one-pot pasta dish was widely criticised but later copied by many who had watched the show.

She was also called out for sprinkling edible flowers over almost everything.

Season two will air later this year.

Elsewhere on the sixth episode of the podcast, Meghan revealed she was handy with a sewing machine.

“I can sew, but not well, enough to mend something,” Meghan told her guest.

“I was a theatre major, and part of the program was that you couldn’t just do the acting,” she said of her time at Northwestern University.

“You had to do soup to nuts, every part of what a production would entail, which I actually think is incredible training for when you’re running a team because you appreciate what the sound person does and what the lighting person does.

“The wardrobe department and sewing were part of it too, so I am comfortable with a sewing machine,” she said.
