Meghan Markle makes rare comment about her miscarriage in latest Confessions of a Female Founder podcast episode

Meghan Markle has made a rare comment about her 2020 miscarriage.

Before the 2021 birth of their second child, Princess Lilibet, Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex suffered a miscarriage, which only became known after Meghan wrote a piece for the New York Times.

Now, she’s referenced the devastating family event publicly for the second time, speaking about it in her latest episode of podcast Confessions of a Female Founder.

Speaking with American lawyer, politician and STEM advocate Reshma Saujani, who also suffered miscarriages, Meghan shared her feelings on the aftermath of the loss.

“I’ll bring this up if you are comfortable talking about it,” Meghan told her guest.

“I know you’ve spoken publicly about as you were doing Girls Who Code, all the inner personal things that were happening for you at that time and the miscarriages that you’ve experienced.

“I’ve spoken about the miscarriage that we experienced and I think in some parallel way when you have to learn to detach from the thing that you have so much promise and hope for.

“And to be able to be okay at a certain point to let something go, something go that you planned to love for a long time.”

Saujani told the duchess she thought someone was “reading my diary” by phrasing it that way.

Meghan also spoke of the need women had to keep forging ahead in the face of devastation, to keep “showing up for others” and not following their own advice.

“We’re not allowed to break, we have to keep smiling,” Meghan said.

“All of these [societal] constructs we’ve all been prey to and projected.”

In the deeply personal New York Times Op Ed, Meghan spoke about the “almost unbearable grief” and the moment in her pregnancy she knew something was wrong.

“I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second,” she wrote.

“I felt a sharp cramp. I dropped to the floor with him in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm, the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right.”

Prince Harry also reflected on the loss in his memoir, Spare, saying he “felt totally hopeless”, recalling that they “both wept” as they left the hospital to bury their “tiny package softly in the ground”.

Meghan also spoke about juggling work and motherhood elsewhere in the podcast episode, which focused on playing the long game and being unafraid to fail along the way.

The actress-turned-royal-turned-entrepreneur revealed her two kids, Archie and Lilibet, were sick and home from school as she recorded the podcast.

“My kids right now – one has RSV, the other has influenza A, I hear the little pitter patter of feet upstairs, they’re home from school – you know, cough syrup all night and rubbing their backs and we still find a way to show up for both [home and work],” Meghan said.

”But being able to be comfortable enough, maybe that’s how we teach the next generation who might not feel as inspired to do some of the change-making that we know has been so fundamental – just be honest in the journey of it.

“‘Today I’m going to show up for you but I’m going to show up for you in my sweat shirt today because I’ve been up all night with my babies, but I’m still gonna show up for both because both matter and both are what keep my cup full’.”
