An ally of Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex seems to have backtracked on her stance in the wake of the royal’s new Netflix show.
Katherine Ryan, a Canadian comedian who is based in the UK, previously defended the 43-year-old and her endeavours outside of the royal family.
But a closer look, especially in the wake of her latest project, has Ryan re-evaluating.

“I was rooting for Meghan Markle,” she said on the latest episode of her podcast, but now admits, “she is very Hollywood, even for me.
“I don’t like that in people. I see now, and maybe it’s just the project she’s choosing. It does feel like she has lied about whether she knew who Prince Harry was and these details about her childhood change and don’t add up,” said the comedian.

One example was when Meghan said on her new show that she grew up eating TV dinners, but in an old video she said she would eat farm fresh, and other “little things” like that.
“Her whole act just seems like very manicured and very forced,” Ryan, 41, said.
She says Meghan’s “act” is typical of that of “Hollywood people”, and the comedian “certainly [doesn’t] think she’s a bad person.

“She likes cozying up to celebrities.” (Netflix)
“But I think she likes cozying up to celebrities, and she wants the one million dollar deal, like or ten hundred million dollar deal like anyone would. And she likes the fact that she’s married to a prince, like, of course.”
However, Ryan would prefer if the former actress were more upfront about her intentions.
”I would rather someone lean into that and be like, ‘Oh my God, I used to be on Suits and I’m married to a f–king prince. Like I would rather that than this act of ‘Oh, I’m just so humble.’

“So I don’t know if you guys are watching this like flower sprinkles Netflix show that she’s got, but it’s really revving people up.”
Ryan also took issue with the now-viral scene of Meghan schooling her friend Mindy Kaling on calling her by her married name, Sussex.
“She’s like, “You know, I am Sussex now. My last name is Sussex and it feels so wonderful to have the same last name as the royal family – I mean, my children.’

“It’s the way to hang on to the Duchess of Sussex.” (Jake Rosenberg/Netflix)
“Like fine, if you want to be Meghan Sussex. But then, let’s be honest about why you’re choosing that. Don’t be like, ‘I had no idea who he was. I never even been to Sussex’ – It’s because it’s the way to hang on to the Duchess of Sussex.”
Ryan previously defended the Duchess of Sussex in 2022 when the Sussexes first began expanding with their different ventures, at the time saying, “I love Meghan Markle’s voice and her confidence to challenge the norm and what’s expected of her in that role.”
