The Met Gala is the chance to meet fashion royalty – and occasionally, actually royalty also.
Since its inception, theFundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art has hosted the world’s biggest stars and longs for extravagance, splendor and performance.
Perfect for a princess.

Even Anna Wintourwho has led the fundraiser since 1995, considers royalty gracing the steps of the Met the Holy Grail. Catherinethe now Princess of Wales and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex as her dream guests in 2019.
“I would love to have the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge together,” Wintour continued Today.
“They can leave their husbands at home; I just want the two of us.’
Neither of them have been present yet, but if they ever doa look back at all the royals who graced the carpet proves that they will certainly be in good company.

Princess Diana
Princess Diana attended the Met Gala only once, in 1996, but that was all it took to cement herself in the event’s all-timer lists.
The Princess of Wales arrived in a stunning navy blue slip dress designed by John Galliano for Dior, which matched her beloved sapphire jewelry, just four months after her divorce from the current King Charles.
Although the dress is now seen as an iconic style moment, it was not actually designed this way.
According to Galliano, Diana made a late alteration to the dress.

“Fast forward to the event, and all I remember is her getting out of the car,” the designer said in the series, In fashion: the 90s.
“I couldn’t believe it. She had torn the corset out. She didn’t want to wear the corset. She felt so liberated. She had torn the corset out. The dress was much more sensual.”
It will come as no surprise that Diana’s presence was a breakthrough for the event and, according to insiders, prompted Wintour to transform the event into the spectacle we know it as.
Filipa Fino, former senior accessories director at American Fashionworked with Wintour for seven years.
Speak with The timesshe recalled how Diana attended the event with Wintour’s then rival, Harper’s Bazaar editor Elizabeth Tilberis urged her former boss, who believed she should have been the one to accompany the princess to the ball.
Sadly, Diana died just eight months after attending the event
“This seed of Anna never being able to host Princess Diana at the Met, and her vision of what it should be – worthy of a princess – is what drove her from 1996 to today. She took on the Costume Institute Ball as her own personal project,” Fino said.
Princess Beatrice

Princess Beatrice was a surprise attendee at the 2018 event.
She embraced the theme Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination in a regal purple dress by Alberta Ferretti.
Queen Rania of Jordan
It’s not just princesses who grace the Met Gala carpet, but occasionally queens too.

The Queen of Jordan attended twice, in 2007 and 2016.
The 2007 theme was Poiret: King of Fashion, in honor of the iconic French fashion designer, and Queen Rania honored it with a structured, navy blue and black kaftan-style dress.
For the 2016 Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology event, she wore Valentino.
Charlotte Casiraghi

Charlotte Casiraghi is twelfth in line for the throne of Monaco and has graced the Met four times.
As the granddaughter of Hollywood star and royal Grace Kelly, it’s no surprise that she is a style icon in her own right.
From a colorful, layered Gucci dress in 2016 to a lacy black dress in 2023, she has always brought her unique, edgy aesthetic with her.

After so much color in her first appearance, Charlotte has since opted for black – but that certainly doesn’t mean boring.
Princess Marie Chantal
Princess Marie-Chantal is married to Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece and Prince of Denmark.
The princess clearly has a penchant for art, attending the New York Academy of Art and Fashion Institute of Technology and even interning with Andy Warhol in high school.

For the 2001 event celebrating Jackie Kennedy’s fashion at the White House, Marie-Chantal got the theme right: with a dress worn by the former US first lady herself.
She wore a one-shoulder draped Valentino dress worn by Kennedy in 1967.
Princess Elisabeth von Thurn und Taxis

She has performed at the Met four times, embracing a variety of styles from structured minis to punk.
The look below was of course for the 2013 gala, with the theme PUNK: Chaos to Couture.
Princess Elisabeth later attended two years in a row with two very different looks: a mini dress with Swarovski crystals designed by Mary Katrantzou in 2016, and a dusty pink Simone Rocha jacket with floral applications in 2017.
