Millions shivering as polar blast brings snow to multiple states

Millions of people in south-eastern Australia should dig out their winter woolies in the coming days as an Arctic explosion is forecast to bring low temperatures and snow to several states.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting a high of just 14 degrees for Melbourne today, the coldest day of the year so far.

It will only be 12 degrees in Canberra, while Adelaide (17 degrees) and Hobart (13 degrees) will also feel the cold.

Sydney will be slightly warmer with a high of 19 degrees, but that is still very chilly for 2026.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, temperatures across the region will rise by a few degrees from tomorrow, but will remain within the same range for the next few days.

Weather zone has also forecast “showers of small hail and snow” in areas as far north as the NSW Central Tablelands, as well as parts of Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT.

Today, Weatherzone forecast that snow could fall as low as 500 meters above sea level in Tasmania, 600 meters in Victoria, 800 meters in southern NSW and 1100 meters in the ACT and central NSW.

“Southwesterly winds will strengthen over southeastern Australia in the wake of the cold front, becoming strongest on Thursday and Friday,” Weatherzone reported.

“Severe weather warnings may be issued for damaging wind gusts in parts of Victoria, Tasmania and NSW, particularly near the coast and on higher ground.”
