Office drama: Person writes note to combat thief and manager calls it petty, but not everyone agrees

Published on

A frustrated office worker has turned to a pen and a sticky note to try and thwart a thief that has been getting into their coffee creamer in the communal fridge.

“We have a fridge at work and we all have to put our initials on all of our stuff,” they shared on Reddit’s ‘Mildly Infuriating’ thread.

“My creamer has my initials (not pictured) on top of the cap in red capitalized letters,” they continued.

“I had bought my creamer a week ago and it’s already less than half way full,” the office worker explained.

Of course, they’re pretty annoyed about it.

“I slapped on the sticky note (pictured) and started marking off when I last used it,” the post continued.

“My supervisor think I’m being extremely petty but I told her I really don’t care. Whoever it is needs to stop using my stuff.”

The office worker shared a photo of the bottle of coffee creamer with the yellow sticky note attached to it.

It reads: “NOT a community creamer. DO NOT USE!! Thanks.”

Not convinced the note will work, Redditers suggested other methods the office worker could use to protect their coffee creamer.

The big piece of advice was to use anything but the original container, because people aren’t going to be too keen on a mystery liquid.

“You can even get creative and use a cleaned out mayonnaise jar with your name on it for the coffee creamer,” one suggested.

“That way when someone tries to borrow some of your mayonnaise, they’re gonna be too confused/sickened by what’s inside and never try that again.”

Another suggested: “Could also put something else in the original container and attach a note that says THIS IS NOT CREAMER! DO NOT USE! in big bold letters that the thief will undoubtedly ignore.”

“Big red marker, BREAST MILK,” another said.

One Redditer shared: “Came here to say the same – someone kept using my oat milk thinking it was communal, so I started bringing it in a travel coffee tumbler (not see-through).

“People assume it’s someone’s personal drink and not creamer. Worked very well! I am using past tense because this person finally left and now I can do whatever I want.”

“Write ‘specimen’ on a paper bag and put it in that,” another suggested.

“Refill it with white Gatorade, that should give them pause from now on,” another said.

Another shared a photo of coffee creamer fitted with a bottle lock! Which would certainly fix the problem.

One Redditer suggested a 3D printed bottle lock such as this. (Reddit)

“3D printed creamer lock. Stops the casual thief but a really devious person will poke a hole in it. But that’s another story,” they shared along with the photo.

“Seriously, not sure if I’m impressed by the innovation or just depressed by the fact we need inventions like these because of all of the selfish ‘douchbags’ in the world,” one Redditer commented.

Of the manager accusing the officer worker of being “petty” it was suggested: “Tell your supervisor she’s free to supply the office with creamer but you’d prefer not to. Or supply it and then file an expense report.”
