A heartbroken cat is coming to terms with being back at a shelter just two days after being adopted.
The manager of FurKids Midtown Atlanta Centre in the US shared Porchy’s story in a TikTok video.
While animals being returned to shelters is all too common, the reason Porchy was returned is particularly baffling.

“Porchy was adopted and returned less than 48 hours later… because it was ‘too overwhelming’ that he would meow for attention after only a day,” the caption on Deanna’s video read.
“He spent six months in a shelter. He was just happy to be in a home.”
The 18-month-old was so devastated about being returned that he “cried for an hour” while sitting perched at a door looking out into the shelter hallway.
Deanna said this wasn’t typical behaviour for Porchy who was clearly confused and affected by what happened.

She added that this particular situation made her “super emotional” because of how beloved Porchy is by the people who work at the shelter.
“Having to keep a smile on your face when you can feel an animal’s broken heart is so hard… we are so sorry Porchy,” Deanna captioned the post.

“The silver lining in his return is that we think it’s the universe’s way of saying that Porchy deserved better.”
Porchy is now available for adoption again with the shelter hoping he will find an owner who can commit to him and give him the life he deserves.
The TikTok video tugged at the heartstrings of many who are shocked that a cat would be returned because of a natural sound they make.
“His little paws on the door he’s so precious. Hoping he finds a loving family soon,” a woman said.
“People really need to understand. Animals are a 10 to 15 year commitment!! if you do not plan committing to taking care of your animal and loving it for its whole life. Do not get one. Simple,” another said.
“Please update us if he gets adopted. i can see a lot of us care about him,” one wrote.

Here in Australia another shelter manager is making a plea after becoming overwhelmed with the number of unwanted cats and kittens that get left with them.
Emilea Harris from The Cat Protection Society of Victoria rescue centre posted a message to the public on Facebook after a cat owner abandoned his kitten to go on holiday.
“He said he did not want the cat anymore because he was going on holiday and didn’t want to put it in a cattery because it costs money,” Harris told 9honey Pets.

“I just thought, ‘I am done’,” Harris said. “[This cat] just meant nothing to him.”
The shelter is urging cat owners to get their pets desexed and if they think it’s too expensive to reach out to organisations like theirs which has options for more affordable desexing.
“Please desex your cat. Keep them safely contained. Don’t contribute to a problem that shelters across Victoria are drowning in,” Harris said in her Facebook post.
