Police hunt man who fired shots after car chase through Sydney’s west

A western Sydney suburb was locked down for hours overnight as police searched for a gunman.

The search started from a simple traffic violation and the fugitive remained on the run this afternoon.

The gunman, dressed in high visibility, was last seen in Guildford.

Officers attempted to stop the Nissan Ute for a traffic violation in South Wentworthville at 9.20pm yesterday. (Nine)

“A vehicle with irregular license plates made a right turn into road signs,” Chief Inspector Rick Agius said.

The vehicle was initially spotted in South Wentworthville, before authorities went on a 6-mile chase and was eventually detained by police.

But the driver ran over and fired five shots into the air.

“The man, in my opinion, is completely irresponsible and stupid in his actions by discharging a firearm in a public place,” Agius said.

“We are very lucky that no one was injured or killed.”

After a six-hour manhunt and a search of the vehicle, authorities are no closer to finding out who this man is and are hoping a member of the public can identify him.
