A family in Sydney’s south-west has been left terrified after a drive-by shooting and firebombing at their home. According to police, it appears to be a case of mistaken identity.
Emergency services were called to Sapphire Place in Eagle Vale after neighbors reported a shooting at around 4.30am today.
When officers arrived, a black BMW sedan was found far outside the family home.
Acting Commander Michael Moroney said that while the house itself appeared to be a target, its occupants were not the intended target.
“What I understand at this stage is that these residents were only new to that location,” Moroney said.
“So they…weren’t the intended targets.
A man, woman and three children inside the home became terrified and told 9News the shooting and firebombing was a case of mistaken identity.
The homeowner said her family was asleep when several shots rang out.
“We just moved here, we haven’t been here long,” she told 9News.
‘It’s clearly a case of mistaken identity, we’re not bad people.
“There was a bullet hole that skimmed over it [the kids’] heads and into the roof.”
Police believe the attack was planned well in advance, with the same group spotted on security cameras 30 minutes before the ambush and arriving to scout the street.
While only three men were captured on CCTV before fleeing in a dark-coloured car, police say they are looking for a wider network.
“We are looking closely at who previously lived there as the lead investigation for this ongoing investigation,” Moroney said.
Authorities are appealing to anyone in the Eagle Vale area with dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward immediately.
