Prince William and Kate reveal they’re ‘deeply saddened’ by Liverpool ‘tragedy’

Prince William and Kate have expressed their pain after “what should have been a joyful celebration ended with tragedy” in the UK.

The couple penned a personal message, posted across their social media, commenting on the incident where a car drove into revellers in Liverpool during a football parade.

“We are deeply saddened by the scenes in Liverpool yesterday,” they said.

“What should have been a joyful celebration ended with tragedy.

“Our thoughts are with those who were injured and to the first responders and emergency services on the ground.”

Police said 50 people were taken to hospital, several of them seriously injured, after a 53-year-old allegedly rammed into crowds welcoming home the Premier League-winning Liverpool Football Club.

The Prince of Wales is the royal patron of the Football Association after many years serving as president of the organisation.

Prince William was also the royal to have visited Liverpool most recently, meeting youth at a local community centre.

Prince William and Kate last visited together in January 2023, just months before King Charles and Queen Camilla paid a visit ahead of the monarch’s coronation and the city hosting Eurovision that May.

William and Kate weren’t the only royals to send their solidarity to the city amid the chaos.

King Charles, who is currently on a royal tour of Canada, also sent word in a formal statement.

“It is truly devastating to see that what should have been a joyous celebration for many could end in such distressing circumstances,” King Charles III said.

“I know that the strength of community spirit for which your city is renowned will be a comfort and support to those in need.”
