The Prince of Wales has made a rare appearance on BBC’s The One Show to wish a special guest a happy birthday.

“You are a true national treasure and we’ve loved working with you over the years. Have a fantastic day today.

“I dread to think who’s cooking your cake and the criticism they might get, but good luck and I hope it goes really well.”

She was clearly emotional by the message, and stunned that he had sent it in too.

Prince William filmed the pre-recorded message outdoors but it isn’t known from which location.

Dame Mary has met members of the British royal family on several occasions including the Prince and Princess of Wales.

She joined the Princess of Wales at the Back to Nature Festival at RHS Wisley in September 2019 where the pair iced cupcakes.
