Princess Eugenie shares most important lesson learned from mother Sarah Ferguson

Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice have spoken about their close relationship with their mother Sarah Ferguson on Cressida Bonas’s podcast Lessons From Our Mothers.

The royals shared their admiration for their mother, 64, with Eugenie, 35, explaining the most important lesson she has learned from her.

“I think for me… it’s the fire inside, the strength inside of you and how to bring that out, and to pull it in when you most need it,” she said.

They also spoke of learning about the importance of “collaboration” from a young age, with Beatrice, 36, describing how their mother would intervene when they were arguing as young children and urging them to come up with a solution instead.

Beatrice said one of their biggest childhood fights was over a pair of Converse trainers.

“And mum just jumped into that fight and was like, ‘Come on, you can do it!’ The forced collaboration – you’re slightly annoyed about because she’s pushing on a bit of a nerve – but the forced collaboration and that joy of the making up at the end was a big part of what she instilled in us,” Beatrice explained.

“This sense that it’s OK to feel, it’s OK to push on those emotions, but you have to figure out what the resolution looks like as well. So she was very resolution-driven,” she added.

They owed much of this to Ferguson’s close relationship with her older sister Jane.

The sisters spoke of their mother’s strength in the face of her cancer battles, with Ferguson battling both skin and breast cancer in recent years.

“She loves nothing more than meeting people and those that are also suffering from cancer because there’s so much empathy there,” Beatrice said.

“Cancer is something that touches so many people,” she continued. “And I think for her, knowing that she might have been able to do something or help another person by sharing her journey, that’s given her the motivation and energy she needs to really get through this time.”

At this point, Eugenie said, “You’re very good at that, Beatrice, by the way.”
