Princess Isabella of Denmark life and royal duties changing after 18th birthday

Published on

The royal family of Denmark is marking a milestone today, with King Frederik X and Queen Mary‘s daughter Princess Isabella becoming an adult.

The family have planned huge events for the 18-year-old, whose real birthday is April 21, with celebrations moved up to avoid clashing with Easter Monday which falls on the same day this year.

The royal family will be throwing two lavish soirees in honour of the young royal – one today, on April 11 at Aarhus City Hall.

The event will be attended by 300 people, including the Danish Royal Family and attendees from local youth organisations and education programs, with the cost of the event being revealed to be 290,000 kroner ($67,831.87).

A second event is also being planned for April 15, with 1000 young people from across Denmark invited to watch a birthday performance on The Old Stage of The Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen.

The milestone also means that there may be some changes to Isabella’s royal role in the future.

Order of the Elephant

When she turns 18, the young Princess will be bestowed with the Order of the Elephant.

The honour is a Danish royal order of chivalry, alongside the Order of Dannebrog, and is primarily bestowed upon royalty and heads of state.

Her older brother, Crown Prince Christian received his when he turned 18 on October 15, 2023, from his grandmother who was the reigning queen at the time.

Isabella and her two youngest siblings, 14-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, were automatically made Knights of the Order of the Elephant on January 14 when their father ascended the Danish throne following the abdication of Queen Margrethe II, their grandmother.

However they typically don’t receive the actual insignia until their 18th birthday comes. The badge comes in the form of a white enamelled gold elephant decorated with a cross on one side and the monogram of the reigning monarch on the other, and Isabella is expected to wear it at her birthday events.

Royal Duties

Being the second-in-line for the throne behind her older brother and heir to the throne Crown Prince Christian, Isabella may have increased responsibilities being the “spare”.

Though Prince Harry of the British royal family and many others like him viewed the title in a somewhat negative context, this may not be the case for the Danish Royal Family.

Isabella has many examples to follow, even in her own family, starting with the generation above her.

Her uncle Prince Joachim, who is her father King Frederik’s younger brother, has made a career out of being the Military attaché at the Danish embassies in France and the United States.

The “spare” before him was Princess Benedikte of Denmark, the younger sister of his and Frederik’s mother Queen Margrethe.

She also remains in duty to the crown, carrying out royal engagements, attending major events with the royal family, and all-in-all being a representative of the Danish crown.

”I wouldn’t be surprised if, one day, Princess Isabella took on a high-level role representing Denmark abroad,” says 9honey’s royal reporter Natalie Oliveri.

“She certainly does have an air of authority about her that makes her seem like she has big things ahead.”

Education

Of course, all of this excitement will be taking place after the youngster completes her education.

Oliveri expects Isabella to continue with her studies after finishing up at her high school, Øregård Gymnasium – the same school her father, uncle, and brother attended.

“We can expect Princess Isabella to attend university after completing high school, and then go on to form a diplomatic or humanitarian career of sorts, inspired by the passions of her mother, Queen Mary and father, King Frederik,” 9honey’s royal expert said.
