Princess Tatiana of Greece says she lost part of her ‘identity’ when she and Prince Nikolaos divorced

Nearly one year after her divorce from Prince Nikolaos of Greece, Tatiana Blatnik has opened up about that life-changing period in her life, saying she felt as though she had “lost another layer of identity”.

Blatnik, who is also known as Princess Tatiana, reflected on the past 12 months which not only saw her 14-year marriage end but the disappearance of her beloved stepbrother while hiking in the US.

Her words come a month after Prince Nikolaos married Chrysí Vardinogianni in Athens, with members of the Greek, Spanish, and Danish royal families attending the celebrations.

Writing on Instagram Blatnik said: “Last year, I lost another layer of identity”.

“But maybe identity isn’t something we lose, it’s something we evolve, rediscover, and redefine.”

The 44-year-old said she was now “taking a step back before moving forward”.

“This month I will be traveling to some of the places that have shaped me. Seeking the stories, the people & moments that have made me who I am. I’m excited about this and looking forward to sharing it with all of you.”

Alongside photos from her childhood through to her teens and into adult life, Blatnik said her “identity doesn’t fit into a box”.

“Born to a German mother, who grew up in Spain and to a Slovenian father. I was born in Venezuela, grew up in Switzerland and then the US, moved to London… and now living in Greece, somewhere I feel so at home, surrounded by a language and culture that isn’t entirely mine but feels like it should be.”

Last month, Blatnik responded to questions about whether she would continue living in Greece despite divorcing Prince Nikolaos.

She said: “When people ask if I will continue to live in Greece, my answer has never been more of a YES. Because of you. Thank you for opening your doors, your hearts & your homes. Your kindness and support means everything.”

Prince Nikolaos is the son the late King Constantine of Greece, who died in January 2023, and Queen Anne-Marie of Denmark, the sister of Queen Margrethe II.

Nikolaos remarried just 10 months after ending his relationship with Blatnik, tying the knot with Vardinogianni who he is said to have been friends with for some time.

Nikolaos and Blatnik married on August 25, 2010, with royalty from across Europe attending the festivities.

They had no children during their time together.

In April, 2023, the Greek royal family announced the end of their marriage in a statement which said: “Both express the difficulty of this decision, the deep appreciation and respect they have for each other, but also the love with which they have walked all these years.

“The same values ​​of respect and understanding will form the basis of their relationship in the future, a relationship of deep and sincere friendship.”

Blatnik later spoke about experiencing a “painful” year that was “filled with moments of uncertainty”.

In May, 2024, her stepbrother Attilio Brillembourg went missing while hiking in Malibu. So far, no trace of the 53-year-old has been found.

In a recent interview with Greek publication BHMAgazino, Tatiana said adversity has been her “deepest strength”.

“I learned the importance of allowing oneself to feel, to grieve, to process one’s emotions, and to move forward with compassion for oneself,” she said.

“Through these challenges, I understood that while we cannot control what happens to us, we can choose how we react.

“I move forward with hope, knowing that even in the darkest moments there is always light and the opportunity to grow.”

She added: “Life’s challenges remind me how important it is to endure, to hope, to have faith in the power of the human spirit”.
