That viral photo of a glowing “crystal dragon fruit” or a neon-blue strawberry scrolling across your timeline might look harmless—or even mesmerizing—but researchers warn that the growing wave of AI-generated plant imagery poses a genuine health hazard.

A recent study published by botanical and digital media researchers highlights a dangerous trend: the unchecked rise of fake, algorithmically generated fruit and mushroom photos across social networks, search engines, and e-commerce platforms.

Coined online as “AI slop,” these synthetic images depict non-existent plant species, surreal crossbreeds, or wildly inaccurate visual traits attached to real-world produce.

While most users recognize obvious fakes, researchers point out that the threat arises when these renders mimic real-world flora closely enough to fool everyday consumers and amateur foragers.

“When generative AI outputs inaccurate visual markers for edible versus toxic plants, the real-world consequences can be severe,” the report warns. “Forgers and automated content farms are churning out thousands of synthetic images daily to farm clicks, often muddying basic botanical facts.”

The risk isn’t purely theoretical. The study notes several alarming scenarios currently unfolding online:

  • Foraging Misinformation: AI-generated field guides and viral graphics showing incorrect mushroom and berry identifications, increasing the risk of accidental poisoning.

  • Gardening & Seed Scams: Online storefronts using hyper-vibrant AI images to sell fake seeds for non-existent plant varieties, such as “blue watermelon” or “rainbow tomatoes.”

  • Search Engine Pollution: AI-generated images outranking authentic photographs in search queries, making accurate visual identification harder for consumers.

Digital platforms currently lack strict labeling standards for synthetic imagery. As AI models become increasingly adept at rendering natural textures—like dewdrops, skin blemishes, and organic stem patterns—distinguishing reality from algorithmic hallucination is becoming nearly impossible for the average consumer.

Experts advise relying on verified horticultural databases, official extension services, or peer-reviewed field guides rather than social media graphics or AI-assisted search summaries when identifying wild plants or purchasing seeds online.
