Princess Diana’s famous interview with Panorama journalist Martin Bashir, watched by more than 22 million viewers, is still arguably the most explosive royal tell-all.

Years later, in 2021, it was revealed Bashir used “deceitful behaviour” in a “serious breach” of BBC guidelines to secure his interview with the royal.

According to findings from the BBC’s independent investigation led by retired judge Lord Dyson, Bashir used fake bank statements to “deceive” Diana’s brother Earl Spencer into arranging a meeting with the princess.

“By gaining access to Princess Diana in this way, Mr. Bashir was able to persuade her to agree to give the interview,” the report noted. Bashir quit his role with the BBC days before the report was released.

In the original 1995 interview, the Princess of Wales was startlingly candid about the disintegration of her marriage to Prince Charles, speaking of his infidelity with Camilla Parker Bowles.

“Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” she told Bashir.

Diana also admitted to her own affair with James Hewitt, and spoke of suffering from bulimia and from post-natal depression following Prince William’s birth — suggesting she received little sympathy from the royal family.

“It gave everybody a wonderful new label – Diana’s ‘unstable’ and Diana’s ‘mentally unbalanced’. And unfortunately, that seems to have stuck on and off over the years.”
