Thousands of people who have visited a dentist in Sydney over a 25-year period have been urged to get tested for several diseases, including HIV, due to the risk of possible exposure.
NSW Health confirmed authorities had investigated Dr William Tam’s practice at Suite B, 2 Albert Street, Strathfield and uncovered concerns about infection control practices and record keeping.
Although Dr. Tam is now retired and no longer practicing, he has seen thousands of patients who may have been exposed to blood-borne viruses such as HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.
Due to poor record keeping, NSW Health is unable to contact all its patients.
“As a precaution, we are asking all of Dr Tam’s previous patients to be tested for blood-borne viruses,” said Dr Leena Gupta, clinical director of public health for the Sydney Local Health District.
“The poor infection control practices at Dr Tam’s practice leave all former patients at low risk of blood-borne viral infection, which can have serious and long-lasting health consequences.
“People with HIV, hepatitis B or hepatitis C may not have symptoms for decades, so it is important that people at risk of these infections get tested so they can access the right treatment. There are effective treatments available for all three conditions.”
Patients of Dr. Tam have been advised to go to their local GP as soon as possible to be tested for the viruses.
