Top baby names 2025: Babycentre reveals the biggest baby name trends for 2025 so far | Much-loved boys’ name shoots into the top ranks

James and Aurora are among the hottest baby names in the US right now, according to one of the top baby name websites.

The US based BabyCentre tracks popular baby names and looks for trends by examining the baby names registered by hundreds of thousands of parents on the BabyCentre app.

So when it comes to the name trends parents can’t get enough of right now, well birds, luxury brands and a ’90s resurgence are what’s leading the charge, while boys names ending in ‘y’ are on the way out.

BabyCentre also released its top 10 boys and girl’s names for 2025 – and there are a few surprises.

Aurora has entered the top 10 after nudging out Luna, which fell to number 12 after a four-year run in the top spots.

The other top 10 girl’s names are Olivia, Amelia, Sophia, Emma, Charlotte, Isabella, Ellie, Ava and Mia.

Meanwhile for boys, James made a surprise return to the top 10 after knocking out Leo. It joined Noah, Liam, Oliver, Elijah, Mateo, Lucas, Levi, Ezra and Asher.

BabyCentre’s trend specialist Rebekah Wahlberg also shared some notable trends in baby names.

Bird names are soaring

The gender-neutral name Robin made it on to the top 1000 list of names for girls and boys after rising 274 spots to 987th position for girls, while for boys it shot up 97 spots to 960th position.

Other movers included Raven, which went up 39 spots to 241st position for girls, and Dove, which shot up 717 spots to finish at 1678.

Mavis, also linked to birds, moved up 17 spots to 496th position.

For boys, Callum, which is Latin for dove, moved up 21 spots (now at 186) while Jay finished at 232 – up 41 spots.

Luxury brand names on the rise

Bentley, a name synonymous with luxury cars, rose 736 spots for girls to finish in 2035th place while Tiffany, which is forever linked with the iconic jewellery brand, went up 214 spots to 822.

Treasure and Emerald for girls and Cash for boys also rose in the ranks.

For boys, Manolo, linked with the shoe brand, Manolo Blanik and Laurent (Yves Saint Laurent) also moved up the list.

Lux rose 110 spots for boys to 1202th place and 401 spots for girls to come in at 2370.

Celebrity favoured names Golden and Goldie also moved up the list for boys and girls. Golden rose 647 spots for boys to 1876, and 65 spots for girls to 2330.

’90s names are cool again

’90s pop idol Britney Spears will be happy to learn her name is trending again. It rose 1200 spots to finish at 3958, while Shania, made popular by country singer Shania Twain, leapt 800 spots to 1915.

Sabrina climbed to 323rd most popular girl’s name while Diana, forever linked with the former Princess of Wales who died in 1997, moved up 39 spots to 293.

Kelsey and Briana also made big leaps.

Oscar-winning names

The film Anora nabbed Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards and also started a baby name trend in the US, jumping 1105 spots for girls to come in at 2291.

Adrien Brody’s Best Actor win coincides with his name moving up 206 spots, while Kieran, the name shared by Best Supporting Actor winner Kieran Culkin, rose 48 spots.

Meanwhile, Cynthia, shared by Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, rose 204 spots for girls.

Words provide inspiration

Words that are not usually used as names are increasing in popularity with US parents choosing to name their baby boys Wisdom (up 868 spots), Loyal (now at 829), Sincere (534), and Knowledge (1054), while for girls trending names include Praise (1156), Divine (1175), Adore (1365), Queen (940), Miracle (181) and Hope (217).

Boys’ names ending in ‘y’ are out

Boys’ names that end in ‘y’ are falling out of favour.

Among those to record the steepest drops were Finnley, which fell 177 spots and left the top 1000 after more than a decade, Harry (down 252 spots to 804), Huxley (down 223 to 857), Kingsley (down 168 to 1021), Corey (down 139 to 839), and Kacey (down 87 to 887).
