A pair of drivers have been taken into custody after the body of a passenger trapped in a sinking car was pulled from the water in Sydney’s Royal National Park.

The car is believed to have left the road before crashing into Audley Weir in the Sutherland Shire at around 1.15am this morning.

The 20-year-old driver of the Blue Audi was able to free himself from the sinking car and was taken to hospital for mandatory tests.

He has since been released and is now in custody at Sutherland Police Station.

The passenger, also 20 years old, became trapped in the vehicle and his body was found with the submerged car this morning following a multi-agency search.

Sergeant Steven Planinic confirmed that a silver Mercedes has been seized by police and its 18-year-old driver has been taken into custody.

“There was a passenger in the second vehicle who is volunteering at the police station and providing police with information about what happened,” he said.
