UK PM condemns antisemitic attack after two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green

A 45-year-old man, who is also accused of stabbing police officers, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Two men – one in their 70s and one in their 30s – were injured in the attack in Golders Green and are in a stable condition in hospital, police added. No officers were injured.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described “the anti-Semitic attack” as extremely “appalling” and thanked local charity security group Shomrim, Hatzola – a Jewish ambulance service – and the police for responding so quickly.

During the attack, “a man armed with a knife was seen running along Golders Green Road and attempting to stab Jewish members of the public,” according to Shomrim, which provides local neighborhood watch and emergency response.

Shomrim added that it responded immediately and police deployed a Taser as soon as they arrived.

Specialist counter-terrorism officers are leading the investigation and are working to establish the suspect’s nationality, background and possible terrorist links, police said.

Large parts of the road had been cordoned off by police by the time CNN reached the area, and several emergency services were present, including an ambulance and a police helicopter.

London’s Jewish community has been the target of a wave of anti-Semitic attacks in recent weeks.

Last month, arsonists set fire to four ambulances owned by a Jewish charity in Golders Green. Four people were subsequently charged by police.

Then weeks later, a synagogue and the former premises of a Jewish charity, both in north London, were attacked.

No one was injured in the arsons, which all took place within a few kilometers of each other.

Anti-terrorist officers are investigating whether the recent arsons were the work of Iranian allies.

Starmer joined politicians in condemning the attacks, saying: “Attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain.”

“We must all be absolutely clear in our determination to tackle these violations, as we have seen too often recently,” Starmer added in parliament on Wednesday.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said that “London’s Jewish community has been the target of a series of shocking anti-Semitic attacks.

“There should be absolutely no place for anti-Semitism in society,” he said.

Another prominent Jewish organization – the Council of Deputies of British Jews – said it was working with police “to understand what happened and to ensure a strong response”.

The Jewish community in Britain has been around for a long time, but as a percentage of the population it is small, numbering around 300,000 people.

The northwestern London suburb of Golders Green is one of the epicenters, home to kosher restaurants, multiple Jewish schools and several dozen synagogues, as well as large Asian and Middle Eastern communities.

Britain’s Chief Rabbi has said British Jews are facing a campaign of violence and intimidation.

According to the Community Security Trust, the number of anti-Semitic incidents reported across Britain has soared since Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 and the subsequent war in Gaza. The group recorded 3,700 incidents in 2025, compared to 1,662 in 2022.

In October 2025, an attacker drove his car into people gathered outside a synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur and stabbed one person to death. Another person died during the attack after being accidentally shot by police.
