Household staples are so incredibly expensive these days. Even your average supermarket moisturiser can set you back at least $10 so you can’t blame Aussies – myself included – for trying to squeeze out every last drop.
I usually go with the old cut-the-container-in-half route – which is dangerous and messy – or the flick-the-bottle-up-and-down-like-a-whip method – which is relatively effective but rather strenuous on the old elbows.
So, you can imagine my bewilderment when I learned of a new genius hack that uses an unexpected tool to get the last drops of lotion out of your bottle in seconds and with very little effort.

A creator with the username finthun shared a video to Reddit explaining the hack to the Life Hacks Reddit forum.
“Whenever I get to an old bottle of lotion and then you know when you get to the end and you can’t pump anymore of it out,” she says as she tries to pump out the last of her moisturiser.
“But when you open it I can see there’s still a tonne in there.”

The Reddit user says you could simply rest the open container upside down in another container and wait for all the product to slowly decant with gravity.
But that can be a very long process especially with thicker products.
“Sometimes if it’s really gloopy, it’ll take forever,” she says.
This is where the hack comes in.

“So what I like to do is I like to take a massage gun,” she says. Yep you read that right, a massage gun.
The Reddit user holds the container upside down over a second empty container and takes the massage gun to the outside of the lotion bottle.
The vibration of the massage gun loosens up the product from inside the container and, within seconds, it pours out with ease into the separate container.

”That is how you very quickly decant a thicker substance,” she says revealing to the camera the small container of product she was able to get out of the original container.
“You can get like I’d say a couple more days use of this at least,” she added. “Just a random little hack.”

The reason this hack is so effective is due to the effect that vibration can have on non-Newtonian fluids, which are fluids that can have a variable viscosity dependent the stress it is placed under.
Moisturiser is a non-Newtonian fluid so when exposed to vibrations the fluid can change apparent viscosity (which is similar to consistency) making it flow more easily.
