Jasmine Njegovan has decluttered hundreds of homes across Sydney and, without a doubt, clothing is the biggest clutter problem we have.
While the professional organiser has lots of tips to help get that under control, her most simple hack will make a huge difference to the amount of space in your wardrobe.
And all it takes is the right kind of coat hangers.

“The most common thing is people are using, for example, wooden hangers and they think an expensive hanger [is better but] it serves nothing because it’s not space sufficient,” she tells 9honey Living.
“It looks very different when you set up your wardrobe [in a more minimalistic way], which I use velvet hangers, just very simple, very cheap. It’s 30 hangers for $10 from Kmart – your wardrobe will look much more functional and much more, even aesthetic if you change your hangers.
“But people think, ‘Oh, it’s expensive hanger and it’s good’, and, and it does look great, but it’s only for the showrooms, it’s not functional for your wardrobes every day.”

Using the same, streamlined hangers across your entire wardrobe isn’t Njegovan’s only tip, but she says to really get to the bottom of why clients are holding onto clothes and still buying requires asking ourselves some questions.
“We’re finding the worth in what we have, how we look, what we wear, what car do we drive – it’s going deeper into not knowing who we are,” she explains.

When Njegovan is decluttering a wardrobe her approach “depends where the client is on their journey” as some people struggle to let go more than others.
“So with these clients, I have to be very gentle to work through this, because it’s lots of memories there, that they bought it when they were in [a particular time of their life],” she says.

But some of the practical things Njegovan suggests considering include how long it’s been since you’ve worn an item of clothing and if you’re keeping a stained garment you’ve never tried fixing.
“You need to make a decision,” she says, “When I say you need to make a decision… you need to you need to get rid of it basically, it doesn’t serve you the purpose.

“Sometimes it’s like, ‘Oh, but maybe I can take out the stain’. And I’m like, ‘OK, you’re gonna spend time, how much is your time worth? You’re gonna be taking it to the dry cleaner, or you’re gonna be spending another half an hour, an hour trying to clean this shirt that you have not cleaned for 18 months or three years.
“So I need to give examples right there and then for people to make a decision right there and then.”

Once you’ve decluttered the wardrobe, Njegovan says reorganising it so that it will stay organised is all about considering your lifestyle and how often you need certain clothes.
“It’s catered separately for everyone’s style, so I don’t have, a cookie cutter thing that I can just [tell people] I get to know the person, I know your lifestyle, how much time do you spend in the gym, where do the gym clothes needs to be? Are you a corporate? Are you an artist? Whatever you are, we set up the wardrobe the way your lifestyle is right now,” she says.
Once that’s set up add labels and consider keeping items not in season on the top shelf of your wardrobe in a basket that you can swap over as needed.
