Wedding drama: Bride banning mother-in-law from wedding photos over prenup

A bride-to-be is considering banning her mother-in-law from wedding photos over a proposed prenup.

The 27-year-old has explained her reasoning on Reddit’s ‘Am I The A–hole’ thread, saying she and her 29-year-old fiancé have been together for almost five years and his mother “has never liked me”.

The bride says her future mother-in-law is “very involved” in her son’s life.

“I’ve always felt like she sees me as some kind of threat to their bond,” she continued.

Things took a turn when her future mother-in-law began “bringing up prenups constantly”.

“She started sending me articles, books, even a sample prenup she wrote herself, like literally a Google doc,” the bride shared.

“It had stuff in it like I waive all rights to future earnings and if I gain weight after the wedding I would agree to go to counseling. I’m not joking.”

The post continued, “I told her it was inappropriate and that I wouldn’t be discussing legal documents with her.”

The woman added that while her fiancé “backed me up at first”, over time he began defending his mother, claiming she was just trying to “protect” him and adding comments like “you know how she gets”.

But he never actually told her directly to stop it. 

“Things hit a breaking point a few weeks ago when she brought up the prenup again at a family dinner, in front of his relatives,” the bride explained.

“She said I was being difficult and that a woman who refuses to protect a man’s assets has no business getting married.”

The bride said she felt “humiliated”.

“I left the table and we had a huge fight after. I told my fiancé I don’t want her in our wedding photos, I said she can come to the ceremony and be there if she wants but I don’t want her posing in our couple shots or family portraits,” she said.

“I feel like she’s made it clear she doesn’t actually want this marriage to happen and I don’t want to look back at my wedding album and feel fake smiles with someone who’s made this process so miserable.”

Now her future husband’s whole family is “furious”.

“He says I’m escalating things and being too harsh, I told him I’m just setting a boundary after being disrespected over and over,” she said.

“I feel like if I back down again, she’ll just keep walking all over me.”

She then asked Redditers for advice on the situation and plenty warned her to call off the wedding now.

“The mother is irrelevant: the supposed love of your life not having a spine is the problem,” one commented.

“Please don’t marry him till he can consistently stand up for you. He will just continue to yield to her every time there is a problem. You will have three people in your marriage, and she will win,” another wrote.

“Get out before the control escalates,” one Redditer added.

The bride responded to these comments, admitting she is concerned over her future husband failing to stand up to his mother.

“I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately. I expected his mum to be difficult, but I didn’t expect him to keep backing away from standing up for me, that part hurts more than anything she’s said,” she replied.

“I’ve been hearing that more and more, and I think it’s finally sinking in. It’s easy to focus all the frustration on her because she’s loud and in my face about it, but the fact that he doesn’t shut it down is what really scares me.

“You’re right, this isn’t just about her anymore, it’s about what kind of partner he’s choosing to be.”
