Woolworths Price Drop: How the new lower prices range compare to Coles and Aldi

Woolworths has announced new lower prices for almost 400 popular products including many of their exclusive ‘own brands’ as well as Aussie favourites.

These include chicken schnitzel, bacon, tomato sauce, oats, sliced bread, noodles, nappies, rice and dishwashing pods.

Woolworths says these lower prices constitute an average 10 per cent drop in shelf price of included products, potentially saving customers $15 on a weekly $150 shop.

The new lower prices will roll out from May 14 and continue in the coming weeks and months, remaining in place until 2026.

For this week’s Supermarket Sleuths, we decided to test Woolworths new lower prices with their nearest competitors, Coles and Aldi, to see how they compare.

We chose 11 items and focused on value for money by comparing per unit prices as each retailer offers these products in differing sizes, or each supermarket’s closest offering, where possible.

Pantry staples

Tomato sauce

Woolworths has reduced the price of their own brand Tomato Squeeze Sauce in 500mls from $2.10 to $2.

At Coles, their version of own brand tomato sauce is currently $2.10. Aldi comes in with the lowest price. Their Colway Tomato Sauce in 500mls is $1.99.

WINNER: Aldi at $1.99 for 500 mls

Coca Cola

A 2 litre bottle of Coca Cola has been reduced from $4.20 to $3.70 at Woolworths which works out to be $2.10 per litre.

At Coles you’ll pay $4.20 for 2 litre bottles for the same which is Aldi is selling Coca Cola in 1.5 litre bottles and doesn’t have 2 litre bottles listed. You’ll pay $3.29 for that.

Breaking that down to it’s per litre price, Woolworths comes in with the lowest price.

WINNER: Woolworths at $1.85 per litre

Oats

Oats are a popular breakfast choice now that the weather has cooled down and Woolworths has lowered the price of their Woolworths Oats 750 gram packs from $1.70 to $1.60. This works out to be $0.23 per 100 grams.

Coles isn’t offering a 750 gram pack however do have oats on sale in their own brand range, a 350 gram pack for $3.50 which works out to be $0.19 per 100 grams. Aldi’s Golden Vale Oats in 750 grams are priced at $1.59 which is $0.21 per 100 grams.

WINNER: Coles at $0.19 per 100 grams

Sandwich bread

A simple loaf of sliced Woolworths White Sandwich Bread weighing 650 grams has been reduced from $2.50 to $2.40.

At Coles you’ll pay $2.50 for a similar own brand loaf. Aldi has theirs priced at $2.39.

WINNER: Aldi at $2.39 per loaf

Noodles

A 12-pack of Maggi Noodles which makes for a delicious lunch or snack during the colder months has been reduced from $10 to $9.

Coles is selling the same for $10 and Aldi doesn’t stock Maggi Noodles.

So the winner here out of Woolworths and Coles is Woolworths at $9 which works out to be $1.04 per 100 grams compared to Coles at $1.16 per 100 grams.

Aldi do stock their own version of instant noodles called Simplee. They sell for $1.89 for a five-pack which works out to be $0.44 per 100 grams.

WINNER: Aldi at $0.44 per 100 grams

Microwave rice

Simple and delicious Woolworths Microwave Rice in 250 gram packs has been reduced from $1.90 to $1.80 at Woolworths.

Coles brand microwave rice is $1.90. At Aldi you can pick up microwave rice in 250 gram packs for $1.79.

WINNER: Aldi at $1.79 per 250 grams

Chilled and frozen items

Chicken schnitzel

A quick and easy dinner is pre-prepared chicken schnitzel and Woolworths has discounted their 600 gram packs, which includes four pieces, from $10.50 to $9 which works out to be $1.50 per 100 grams.

At Coles you can buy their chicken schnitzel for $10.50 which is $1.75 per 100 grams. Aldi comes in with their version which is called Farmwood in a pack of four for $4.99 which works out to be $1.25 per 100 grams.

WINNER: Aldi at $1.25 per 100 grams

Greek yoghurt

Greek yoghurt has been discounted at Woolworths in their own brand range. From May 14 you can pick up Woolworths Greek Yoghurt in a 1 kilo container for $3.80, down from $4.20, which works out to be $0.38 per 100 grams.

Coles is selling their own brand of Greek Yoghurt for $4.10 which costs shoppers $0.41 per 100 grams. At Aldi you can pick up Lyttos Greek Yoghurt in a 1 kilo container for $3.79 which is $0.38 per 100 grams.

WINNER: Aldi at $0.38 per 100 grams

Middle bacon

Woolworths Middle Bacon in a 1 kilo pack has been reduced from $13 to $11.70 which is $1.17 per 100 grams.

At Coles you can pick up 1 kilo packs of middle bacon for $13 which costs $1.30 per 100 grams and Aldi is selling middle bacon for $11.69 which works out at to be just slightly less that Woolworths.

WINNER: Aldi at $11.69 per kilo

Sausage Rolls

Delicious Four N Twenty Party Sausage Roll packs in 500 grams have been reduced at Woolworths from $7.50 to $7 which is $1.40 per 100 grams.

At Coles they didn’t have 500 gram packs of Four N Twenty Party Sausage Roll listed, instead selling them in 1 kilo packs for $16.50 which is $1.83 per 100 grams.

Aldi doesn’t sell the Four N Twenty brand, leaving Woolworths the winner out of the two majors.

Aldi offers party sausage rolls in the popular Elsbury brand, 900 grams for $7.99 which works out to be $0.89 per 100 grams.

WINNER: Aldi at $0.89 per 100 grams

Frozen mixed berries

Frozen mixed berries for those keen on whipping up smoothies and desserts have also been discounted. Woolworths Frozen Mixed Berries in a 1 kilo bag have been reduced from $12 to $11, costing $1.10 per 100 grams.

At Coles the nearest product is the Coles Frozen Mixed Berries in 500 gram bags for $6.50 which breaks down to $1.30 per 100 grams.

Aldi sells frozen mixed berries in their Orchard & Vine range, 500 grams for $5.69 which is $1.14 per 100 grams.

WINNER: Aldi at $1.14 per 100 grams

Out of the 11 products subjected to this price comparison, Aldi had the lowest prices in nine catergories.

Woolworths had the lowest per unit price for Coca Cola and Coles for sliced white bread.

It is expected that Coles will price match on some of, if not all of these products by May 14 when the new Woolworths prices kick in.

What this cost comparison shows, however, is that Aldi is still the most affordable overall when it comes to grocery staples. Although for customers who are willing to shop at multiple locations, it does pay to pop into Woolworths and Coles for some of their weekly specials.
