Woolworths Scan&Go: ‘Disappointing’: Supermarket discontinues in-store check out option

Published on

Woolworths shoppers have expressed their disappointment at the supermarket giant’s decision to discontinue its Scan&Go Mobile possibility to do shopping.

From June 8, the Scan&Go Mobile function will no longer be available via the Woolworths app. This means that from this date, consumers will no longer be able to scan their groceries on the go with their own devices.

Instead, they will be limited to using Scan&Go trolleys offered in stores, but this will only be available in some stores.

However, Scan&Go carts can be difficult to find, with the supermarket giant also announcing that they will be scaled back and removed from multiple locations.

“In the coming months, the Scan&Go Mobile feature in the Woolworths app will no longer be available in Woolworths stores,” a Woolworths spokesperson told nine.com.au.

“While we are committed to testing new ways to shop, we have decided to move away from this feature due to low customer adoption.

“Instead of Scan&Go Mobile, we are introducing Scan&Go trolleys at some locations.

Shoppers have taken to Reddit to share their displeasure.

“Woolworths is removing the app scan and moving to all locations next month,” shared a Woolies shopper Reddit’s ‘Woolworths’ thread.

“Disappointing because I use it every week and find it a huge time saver.

“They are not being replaced by trolleys at all locations, so back to long lines for us.”

“I’m disappointed about this too, my store isn’t getting carts either,” another shopper added.

“I love the part of the email where they said, ‘Rest assured that our team remains ready to support you at our staffed or self-service checkouts on your next visit.’”

The original poster replied: “‘Ready to support us’ aka watch us wait in line for 20 minutes before doing the bare minimum while we pack our bags ourselves.”

Woolworths customers were informed of the change via email and on the supermarket’s website.

“We are making some upcoming changes to Scan&Go Mobile,” they said.

“In the coming months, the Scan&Go Mobile feature in the Woolworths app will no longer be available in Woolworths stores.

“While we are committed to trying new ways to shop, we made the decision to switch from Scan&Go Mobile due to low customer adoption.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

They then listed the stores affected by this change and their respective shutdown dates.

Twenty NSW stores will be affected by the end of Scan&Go Mobile, including Miranda, Caringbah, Rouse Hill, Camden and Crows Nest. 10 Qld stores are also affected, including Castletown, Springwood, Gordonvale West and Redland Bay.

The change will apply to seven VIC stores, including Watergardens, Mernda and Highnett.

Five WA stores are also affected, including Inglewood, Midvale and Miami Plaza, and three SA locations in Fulham Gardens, West Lakes and Cumberland Park.

The supermarket will then introduce Scan&Go trolleys in selected locations only, replacing Scan&Go Mobile for some customers in stores in NSW, Qld, WA and SA.

Scan&Go technology allows customers to scan their groceries on the go before placing them in their shopping cart.

This will now only be available via a Scan&Go trolley offered by supermarkets, and not via the Woolworths app.

After shopping, customers take their shopping cart to a Scan&Go checkout to pay for their purchases.

Woolworths first introduced Scan&Go in August 2024 following an initial trial in selected locations.

It was then introduced to more stores in 2025, ahead of the current partial rollback in 2026.
