World waits for details after Trump promises end to war near; Trump says ‘if’ he makes a deal, it will differ from former Iran deal; Senators say Iran deal is ‘doomed to fail’

The world is eagerly awaiting more details after US President Donald Trump said a deal to end the war in Iran had been “substantially negotiated”.

The potential deal would end the war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and see Iran give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, with details and timelines to be worked out later, regional officials told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Tehran would agree to give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, said the two regional officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive negotiations.

One official, with direct knowledge of the negotiations, said how Iran would give up its highly enriched uranium would be subject to further talks over a 60-day period.

Some of it would likely be diluted, while the rest would be transferred to a third country, possibly Russia, the official said. Russia has offered to take it over.
