Queensland rail workers to strike as NRL Magic Round brings thousands of fans to city

TheQueensland The railway workers’ union has announced it will take action over the next two weeks after wage negotiations with the government broke down yesterday.

The work stoppages will put additional pressure on a network already under strain following extended track closures through April, ongoing maintenance work and the NRL’s Magic Round, a four-day rugby league festival with all 18 teams playing at Suncorp Stadium in mid-May.

The Rail Tram and Bus Union said it failed to reach a wages agreement with Queensland Rail at yesterday’s Fair Work Commission conference because the deal offered was similar to one that had already been rejected.

“Yesterday was a disappointment, and there’s no doubt about that,” Queensland union secretary Peter Allen said.

“There was some progress, but it was small and not nearly enough.”

The ongoing strikes are believed to be impacting several sections of the workforce, including maintenance staff and train signallers.

“We will not stop any trains – this will be measured and deliberate,” Allen said.

“If the network is disrupted, that is Queensland Rail’s choice, just like at Easter.”

Queensland Rail confirmed more than a dozen additional rail services were planned for the Magic Round weekend of May 14 to 17, but work stoppages could still impact services for commuters.

“Rather than impact commuters traveling to work, school or football, we are asking the unions to stop their matches and return to the negotiating table,” the spokesperson said.

“Queensland Rail has made a fair and reasonable offer, including a standalone electrician contract, a key demand of the Electrical Trades Union.”

“With every passing day, industrial action is hampering Queensland Rail’s ability to deliver safe and reliable train services to our customers.”
