ABC director of news Justin Stevens resigns from national broadcaster after 19 years

ABC news director Justin Stevens has resigned from the ABC after almost two decades national broadcaster.

Stevens, a former executive producer of 7:30 am who was appointed as director of news, analysis and research in 2022, confirmed that he will be leaving the organization due to professional and personal reasons.

In a statement, the veteran journalist described his tenure as “incredibly tough but hugely rewarding”.

“That said, for both professional and personal reasons, now is the right time for me to move on and for someone else to take the helm of the best news team in the country,” Stevens said.

Stevens has undergone several major leadership changes during his time in the top job, including two directors and two chairmen.

His time at the helm was also marked by several controversies.

In September 2025, the ABC was ordered to pay a $150,000 fine to journalist Antoinette Lattouf for her unlawful dismissal after being fired from a post in Gaza. Stevens was not involved in the decision to terminate Lattouf.

Stevens joined the ABC in 2006 and worked on its flagship current affairs programme, 7.30, for eight years.

He also served as Four corners producer before being named news director.

ABC director Hugh Marks thanked Stevens for his contribution and said he had achieved excellent results in the role.

“Justin has achieved this through a period of significant change and challenges in the media landscape, both internationally and in Australia,” Marks said in a statement.

“I am grateful to have witnessed the strength of Justin’s editorial instincts and his dedication to the ABC and its audiences.

“I wish him the best of luck in the future.”

Donna Field, ABC’s head of regional, national and metro news, will serve as acting news director until a replacement is named.
