For Brooklyn Beckham and his wife, Nicola Peltz, the invitation to a catered soiree at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Montecito home came somewhat out of the blue.

Beckham had not seen Prince Harry since 2011 and his wife is never thought to have previously met either Harry or Meghan.

In other circumstances, such an invitation might have passed largely unnoticed.

But with both couples engulfed in bitter public rifts with their families, and Brooklyn’s parents, David and Victoria Beckham, increasingly close to the King and Queen, it has prompted great intrigue.

Only adding to that intrigue is the fact that the Princess of Wales happened to attend a fashion industry event this week dressed head to toe in designs by none other than Victoria Beckham.

Was it, as some have suggested, a tacit show of support for the fashion designer who finds herself engulfed in an all-too-familiar family drama? Or was it merely coincidence, a simple show of support for British fashion?

Regardless, the royal seal of approval could not have proved more timely for the embattled Beckhams.

Similarly, the “unexpected” Montecito dinner invitation came at a pivotal time.

The Beckhams’ family dramas have dominated headlines in recent days after Brooklyn, 26, and Nicola, 30 – the daughter of US billionaire Nelson Peltz – failed to attend any of David’s lavish 50th birthday celebrations.

Their absence was all the more conspicuous given that they were thought to have flown in from Los Angeles to the UK last week.

‘Timing is pure coincidence’

A source told the Telegraph that the Sussexes’ invitation had been extended before the fallout.

They said: “Brooklyn and Nicola were invited prior to David’s numerous global birthday galas, so the timing is pure coincidence.

“While it was an intimate gathering, there were several additional guests, including VIPs and film executives.

“Brooklyn and Nicola had a wonderful time and found Harry and Meghan to be particularly kind, caring and generous.”

Both couples are increasingly estranged from their UK-based families, the blame laid by some squarely on the shoulders of Nicola and Meghan, the American wives for whom their devoted British husbands appear to have sacrificed everything.

No surprise then, that the two women found “a lot of common ground” during last week’s extraordinary dinner.

The Duke, too, acutely aware of how isolating it feels to live more than 5,000 miles away from your family amid a bitter, ongoing rift, offered his “unwavering support” to Brooklyn Beckham, according to The Sun.

The two couples reportedly swapped numbers, perhaps aware that few others had walked in their shoes.

Nicola and Meghan’s ‘common ground’

That details of the dinner made it into a tabloid newspaper should come of little surprise given the way the media has been used to send messages, both subtle and otherwise, throughout both family feuds.

A source told The Sun: “This was an unexpected invite, but one gratefully received by Brooklyn and Nicola, who both feel pretty battle-wounded.

“Harry and Meghan were very empathetic and very kind to them both. Harry was fully aware of the situation and offered Brooklyn his unwavering support as someone who has been through similar.

“Nicola and Meghan also had a bit of a ‘deep n’ meaningful’ as obviously both women have been positioned in the media as homewreckers? the women to tear apart their husbands’ families.

“Meghan had a lot of sympathy for her, and said there was shared common ground.

“They didn’t meet in relation to recent developments and headlines, but it was an honest but very welcome coincidence.”

Around 18 guests are said to have been at the dinner, including Paramount CEO Brian Robbins and his wife Tracy.

Nicola was reportedly invited through a mutual friend who was also at the dinner.

Beckham rift ‘terribly sad’

The Sussexes’ ongoing rift with the Royal family can be traced back to when Meghan first came onto the scene in 2016.

It continues, to this day, with the Duke just last week giving a blistering interview to the BBC in which he said his father would not speak to him and that he had no idea how long he had to live.

Meanwhile, sources said to be close to the Beckhams have described their own family rift as “terribly sad”, and say the dispute has been “going on for a long time”.

“[David and Victoria] adore Brooklyn, their children are everything to them, but Brooklyn isn’t talking to them,” one insider, said to be a long-standing friend, told MailOnline at the weekend.

There have been claims the feud began when Nicola opted not to wear a Victoria Beckham-designed wedding gown during their lavish nuptials in 2022.

More recently, sources apparently close to Nicola have been briefing that the source of the rift is Kim Turnbull, the girlfriend of Brooklyn’s brother Romeo.

Long-standing royal relationship

The Beckhams’ tangled relationship history with the Royal family is long and complicated.

Brooklyn Beckham was just 13 when he last met Harry at an award ceremony in 2011.

David and Victoria attended Harry and Meghan’s 2018 wedding but the two couples later fell out amid claims that Meghan had accused Victoria of leaking stories about her.

Meanwhile, David has become increasingly close to the royals, having last year become an ambassador for the King’s Foundation, swapping bee-keeping tips with the monarch at his Highgrove home

Last October, David joined the Prince of Wales to celebrate the replacement of London’s ageing air ambulance helicopters, the two men greeting each other like old friends.

In December, the Beckhams joined the King and Queen at a state banquet at Buckingham Palace, held in honour of the Qatari ruler.

Then in February, the couple were among the King’s guests at a black tie dinner at Highgrove to celebrate Anglo-Italian relations.

The following month, Victoria Beckham was invited to Buckingham Palace for a Women of the World event hosted by the Queen.

Whether the burgeoning friendship between the California-based branches of the two families will be similarly fruitful remains to be seen.

A spokesman for the Sussexes declined to comment.
