King Charles addresses congress; Trump administration moves to challenge Jimmy Kimmel’s network licence; UAE says it will leave oil conglomerate OPEC

Charles is only the second British monarch to address a joint session of Congress. The first was his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who did this in 1991.

Charles brought this up in the opening of his speech.

“As I speak in this distinguished chamber of debate and deliberation, I cannot help but think of my late mother, Queen Elizabeth, who was also given this important honor in 1991 and spoke similarly under the watchful eye of the Statue of Liberty above us,” he said.

“So I come here today with the utmost respect for the United States Congress; this citadel of democracy was created to represent the voice of the entire American people to advance sacred rights and freedoms.”

He also spoke about the long-standing alliance between the US and Britain, but without directly addressing Trump’s soured relationship with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Charles said today was a “great occasion in the life of our nations to express to the people of the United States the highest esteem and friendship of the British people.”
