From pets to luggage, your phone and even family members, panic often sets in before you can methodically think about where to start looking.

One $20 gadget has become a game-changer for people who are not only trying to avoid those dreaded moments, but also want to know exactly where that item or person is.

Smart tags and luggage trackers are a reliable way to keep track of everything and reduce worries, whether you’re traveling or just at home and can’t find your wallet.

For Serena, smart tags have been useful while traveling.

Nine travel editor Kristine Tarbert agrees that smart tags are a must in suitcases these days.

“Losing your luggage while traveling is something that many people worry about, and for good reason, as millions of suitcases are lost every year, which is why luggage trackers have become a travel must-have,” she says.

“Not only can they give you peace of mind knowing where your bag is, but there have also been some cases where travelers have used the information from their baggage trackers to help airlines track down a missing bag.”

But people are using them for more than just luggage, with smart tags helping to reduce fear of pets going missing.

“I only have one smart tag and it’s attached to my dog’s collar! I’m a helicopter pet parent and constantly paranoid about losing it (although if it got out, it would come five yards down the street and return to find me),” says Chantelle.

“Even though I’ve never had to use it, it gives me peace of mind because I always know where he is when I’m not with him. Especially when I go on vacation and leave him with friends, family or a dog sitter, I can check in on where he is.”

Jess found another way to use smart tags that was incredibly useful.

“My husband ran with a smart tag when he ran the Sydney Marathon a few years ago. It was useful to keep an eye on him when the marathon app lagged,” she says.

For Jemima, a smart tag provides “great peace of mind”.

“I have a family member with early signs of dementia, so we always have a smart tag in her wallet in case something happens and we need help finding her,” she says.
