A magnitude 4.5 earthquake has struck near Orange in the region N.S.W.

Weak to light tremors were felt as far afield as Sydney and Wollongong after the quake on the edge of the Canobolas State Forest at around 8.20pm.

Geoscience Australia said the explosion occurred at a depth of five kilometers.
