“Maybe if they remove every trace of Harry and Meghan, someone within the royal family will take a liking to it.”

Shortly after receiving the property as a wedding gift from the late Queen Elizabeth in 2018, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex got to work renovating the property to their liking.

They turned what were originally two detached houses into one large family property, raising a total of US$2.8 million (approximately US$3.9 million).

But they only stayed for a short time, leaving the royal family and Frogmore for the sunny shores of California in 2020.

There they bought a $14 million ($19.6 million) mansion in Montecito, where they live with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

In 2023, when Harry’s father, King Charles, officially became the reigning monarch, they were forced to officially leave the property.

The couple reportedly paid a total of US$3.3 million ($4.6 million) for the house, including rent and renovations, and paid it back to the royal family, with the property now owned by the Crown Estate.

The Crown Estate is a collection of land belonging to the British monarch, but is not part of the monarch’s private land holdings.

All money raised through rent goes back to the estate and helps fund the monarchy.

Anyone living in a house on the Crown Estate, royal or otherwise, is expected to pay rent unless it is offered to them by a monarch as a ‘house of grace and favour’.

Frogmore Cottage is located in Home Park, a 2.65 square kilometer royal park that forms the private grounds of Windsor Castle, and is close to the much larger and grander Frogmore House – a royal retreat dating back to the 16th century.

The residence was built in 1801 by order of Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III, as a country retreat for herself and two of her unmarried daughters, Princess Sophia and Princess Amelia.
