Spain’s future queen Princess Leonor to begin four-year university degree after finishing military service

He next queen of Spain will soon begin a new chapter towards her eventual time on the throne.

Princess Leonor, who is 20, is currently in the final stage of military training with the Spanish forces.

Later this year, the Princess of Asturias will begin university studies in Madrid.

The Royal House made the announcement this week and revealed the plans of the heir to the throne.

Princess Leonor will follow a four-year study in political science at the Carlos III University of Madrid.

The course covers topics related to political science, humanities, law, economics, sociology, history and international relations.

Princess Leonor is the eldest daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.

When she eventually takes the throne, she will do so as the first Spanish queen in more than 150 years. Queen Isabella II was the last true queen who reigned between 1833 and 1868.

In a statement, the Royal House said: “Princess Leonor will combine this period of her higher education, in accordance with the corresponding university calendar, with her institutional obligations as heir to the Crown, just as she did during her high school years and the three years at the military academies.”

Leonor has been fulfilling royal duties for several years.

In September 2018 she made her first official public engagement outside the palace at the age of 12, and made her first public speech a month later.

Leonor performed her first solo royal engagement in March 2021.

Later that year the princess moved to Great Britain to study an International Baccalaureate for two years at UWC Atlantic College in Wales.

She will soon graduate from the San Javier Air and Space Academy, where she trained in the Air Force.

The course Leonor completed was spread over three years, modified from the usual five due to the responsibilities that come with her role as heir to the throne.

Princess Leonor started her training in August 2023joined the army at the General Military Academy in Zaragoza.

It was followed by a period at the Spanish Naval School in Marín, where she completed a six-month training cruise on board the Juan Sebastián Elcano, a four-masted schooner, in addition to intensive training on the frigate Blas de Lezo.

Leonor’s father, King Felipe, completed the same military training after university in the 1980s.
