But Paxton is so scandal-prone that it could give Democrats an opening in the conservative state.
As attorney general of Texas, his own staff reported him to the FBI on bribery and corruption charges.
Paxton subsequently fired the whistleblowers.
He was impeached by the House of Representatives but kept his job after a vote to impeach him failed in a single vote in the Texas Senate.
In 2015, he was arrested while attorney general and charged with security fraud, paying a $400,000 fine and performing 200 hours of community service in a deal with prosecutors.
He was also caught on CCTV pocketing another lawyer’s $1,400 pen while it was left near a metal detector.
“To call Paxton ethically challenged is calling it a phone call Jeffrey Dahmer suffer from an eating disorder,” Republican senator Thom Tillis said.
“This man is an empty suit and will not do us any favors by being in the United States Congress.”

Ms. Paxton, herself a senator, did not express support in the election.

He has been an outspoken opponent of gay marriage, transgender rights and COVID-19 restrictions.
Talarico is a state representative and former teacher who also speaks about his own Christian faith. He received a Master of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.
In the first three months of the year, he raised $37 million for his campaign, more than ten times as much as Paxton.
But for the past two decades, Texas has been the prize that Democrats can’t quite win.
But Trump is so close to voters that it could cost Republicans their crown jewel.

Voters have turned hard against Trump, with the most pronounced swing among Hispanic Americans. In Texas, 40 percent of the population is Hispanic.
Trump’s endorsement of Paxton came after a battle with Cornyn to win the president’s endorsement.
Both candidates campaigned on their commitment and loyalty to Trump, but Paxton ultimately won.
