Search underway after passenger allegedly jumps overboard Sydney-bound ship near Moreton Island

Carnival Splendor, a cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Lines, reported that a male passenger fell about 30 km northeast of Moreton Island, Queensland last night.

A Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson said the passenger’s family notified the crew, who then notified authorities.

“Carnival confirmed on Saturday that Carnival Splendor was assisting authorities in the search for a guest who apparently climbed over the safety railing and jumped overboard while the ship sailed from Moreton Island towards Sydney overnight,” the spokesperson said.

“A review of the CCTV footage confirmed the guest’s actions.”

The spokesperson added that the company will continue to assist authorities once the ship docks in Sydney tomorrow.

“Carnival’s Care Team is supporting the guest’s family and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved one,” the spokesperson said.

“[AMSA] has deployed its Cairns and Melbourne-based Challenger jets, five Brisbane metropolitan area rescue helicopters and six surface vessels to the area, with Queensland Police assisting AMSA with the operation,” an AMSA spokesperson said in a statement.

According to Carnival Australia’s website, Carnival Splendor sails in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific region.

It is 290 meters long and can accommodate more than 3,000 passengers and 1,150 crew members on board.
